Rabbit

Rabbits are wonderful pets. They are friendly and inquisitive, social and interesting. They tend to be most active in the morning and evening, so they are ideal for owners who work during the day.

Unfortunately, rabbits are the most neglected pet in Britain according to the Rabbit Welfare Association. Since late 2008, Paws Here has been full of rescue rabbits in need of new homes. In 2009, Paws Here took in over 60 rabbits to be rehomed. Rescues all over the country are full of rabbits, which are frequently given up because people buy them without realising the full extent of their care. Many are also neglected and removed by concerned members of the public or the SSPCA. It is very unfortunate that this gentle, inquisitive animal suffers needless hardship and neglect.

Big breeding centres continue to breed rabbits despite the huge numbers in rescues in need of new homes. We urge you to consider getting a rescue rabbit rather than a baby from a pet shop, no matter how cute they might be. By buying an older rabbit, you learn what its adult personality and temprement will be, and volunteers at Paws Here are always happy to advise you about any health problems the rabbit may have, whereas buying from a pet shop leads to making a blind choice. As well as that, many of our rabbits are already spayed or neutered, so you will not have to arrange for this yourselves.

Rabbits are wonderful pets, but take some work and dedication. It is important to read about a rabbit's needs before taking one on. Please read the articles on our website, and consider buying books like Living with a Houserabbit by Linda Dykes, so you will have a more full understanding about what the care of a rabbit involves. Please also remember that we are always happy to answer any questions about rabbit care you may have, either by phone, by email, or by simply dropping in to the rescue.
