SurrenderingPaws Here and other independent animal shelters exist for genuine emergencies and cases of cruelty or neglect. We are not here to pick up the pieces when someone has made a rash and badly planned decision to take on a pet and subsequently no longer wants to look after it, or when an owner faces a potentially high vet bill that they are unprepared to pay. However, we do take on these cases, which we deem “voluntary surrenders,” if we have the space available for them. If space is unavailable these pets can be put on a waiting list, and brought in to the shelter when space becomes available. If you have a pet that you need to rehome then you can contact us to see if we have a space currently available. All pets given up for rehoming are kept with us for a week or two to settle in, during which time they are given a health check, and after that they will be available for adoption. They will stay either within the shelter itself or in a foster home until they are adopted. We do not split up bonded pairs unless they are fighting, and we often introduce single animals to a friend so they will have a companion. Please bear in mind that rabbits are the most neglected pet in Britain, and we are thus almost always at maximum capacity for rabbits. If you contact us your name may be added to a waiting list. Please think very carefully before taking on a pet rabbit, instead of trusting that others will clean up your mess when you no longer want your pet. Important Note: We are an independent animal rescue and receive no government funding or help. We are run entirely by volunteers. Every day we struggle to make ends meet in our efforts to help the animals in our care. Rehoming Criteria: -You must bring in your pet's cage when you bring them to be rehomed. Not only does this help us to house your pet while it is with us or in a foster home, it also removes the risk of the temptation to fill the empty cage with yet more pets that will one day be given up. -You must give us your details, including name, address and contact telephone number. You will be asked to provide as much information as you can about the pet, including medical history. -We have a rehoming fee which goes towards covering veterinary costs (for rabbits, spaying/neutering costs us around £65, vaccinations are around £17, health checks vary). As you can see, the fee in no way completely covers these costs - the rest has to be made up by fundraising and donations. Then we also have the cost of food and bedding for the pets to consider. And if there is an undiagnosed health problem to be treated, the costs can skyrocket into the thousands. All in all, we have kept these fees to the absolute minimum. The rehoming fees are as follows: Rabbit - £50 Guinea pig - £20 Rats - £10 Hamsters/gerbils etc - £5 |
